Specialist Programme

Access to quality and inclusive education is the foundation for sustainable development and a more equitable world. Our educational projects support the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal (UN SDG) 4 that aims to ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong opportunities for all.

Our specialist volunteers from Singapore share their expertise in curriculum development and pedagogy with educators in Asia to deliver effective teaching materials and impart future-ready life skills to their students.

Project Aim

To enhance the teaching standards of Mathematics in Sarawak at the primary school level by raising the teachers’ content and pedagogical knowledge.

Outcomes

The Maths PLUS project will train 100 primary school teachers to improve their pedagogical abilities. It aims to benefit at least 80,000 students in Sarawak. Through a series of workshops and symposia conducted by the Singapore International Volunteers (SIVs), the educators will enhance their teaching techniques to create more engaging and interesting Mathematics lessons to raise student understanding and performance in the subject.

The project will also introduce Structured Sharing Sessions (SSS) as a support system, providing a platform for Sarawak teachers to convene regularly. These sessions will facilitate the sharing of newly acquired knowledge and experiences among teachers, supporting mutual learning and professional growth.

I have learnt to consider instructional procedures and strategies, assessments, and follow-up activities in lesson planning and will include them in my daily mathematics lessons. Hear from Our Specialist Volunteers in Education

My team and I conducted an online training programme to share teaching ideas using tools driven by technology. We explored virtual materials, applications and software to design interactive lessons for children. One of my biggest takeaways was witnessing the commitment and desire to learn new teaching ideas (despite many constraints and limitations) by our Indian counterparts. This was so that they could reach out to their students in their respective homes to ensure continued learning for the children, no matter what happens in the bigger environment.

It was heartwarming to see the Indonesian teacher-counsellors being so passionate about learning and wanting to upskill themselves so that they can share their knowledge with other teacher-counsellors in their communities. Through this volunteering experience, I have also learnt new grounding techniques from the different groups such as singing songs to deal with trauma therapy.
